MCAs oppose motion to give Eldowas water supply monopoly

The Uasin Gishu County Assembly on Tuesday opposed a motion that sought to give the Eldoret Water and Sanitation Company (Eldowas) mandate to be in charge of all water services in the county.

Langas MCA Francis Muya who moved the motion had argued that there was need for Eldowas' mandate to be expanded so that it handles all matters to do with management of water supply.

Huruma MCA Peter Chomba seconded the motion, with his Soy counterpart Isaac Chirchir supporting it.
"We've allocated a lot of funds in water sector and its prudent that out people get enough clean water which can be achieved by expanding the mandate of Eldowas," noted Mr Chirchir.

Currently the company which is fully owned by the Uasin Gishu County government supplies water to residents in Eldoret town and its surroundings.

However majority of the MCAs opposed the motion noting that the company had no capacity to manage water services for the whole county.

"This company is now under performing and adding more work to it beats logic because if it can't manage water supply for the Eldoret town residents alone how will it handle the whole county," said Ng'enyilel MCA David Sing'oei.

"Eldowas has failed to produce audited reports since counties came in place and it will not be the right time to given them mandate to manage water services in this county yet we don't know their financial status and its ability," added Kapseret Pauline Tuwei.
