County partners with Ampath Kenya to end chronic diseases
Led by Health CeC Margaret Chepkwony and facilitators from Ampath Kenya led by Prof Joe Mamlin, the county government convened a meeting in Turbo sub-county Hospital on Friday where they held extensive discussions on the projects with importance for the region.
This is after Turbo Sub-county was selected to act as a pilot project where the population health initiative will start, before spreading to other remaining five sub-counties.
"Ampath in collaboration with the county government through population health, will be screening and treating all identified chronic diseases at the grass roots. We advise everybody in the county to take part in this unique exercise to ensure their bodies are in good health," said Ms Chepkwony.
"There is need of the partnership so as to fulfill the county's 2014-2018 strategic plan on matters of health. The integration of both programs between the county and Ampath medics has been of great impact in serving the county residents. We want a disease-free Uasin Gishu," added the Health CeC.
Prof Mamlin who is also the founder of Ampath said Ampath’s key role is to tackle all diseases from the community levels before they develop into various tough and uncontrollable stages.
''When facilitators accept our proposal, Ampath and the county government will be able to reduce chronic diseases and save lives," he said.

Bankers concerned over MPs' move to pass Bill to cap interest rates
The Kenya Bankers Association (KBA) has raised concerns after the
National Assembly passed a Bill that seeks to cap bank interest rates,
at not more than four percent, above the Central Bank Rate (CBR).
This aims at taming runaway cost of borrowing.
Through its Chief Executive Officer Habil Olaka, KBA says the Bill will greatly affect SMEs and the entire Kenya's economy, for it will reduce borrowing rates, yet loans are highly depended by a number of Kenyans.

Throw Back Thursday
When I was about eight or nine, my mom burnt some toast.
One night that stood out in my mind is when she had made dinner for us after a very long and rough day at work, She placed a plate of jam and extremely burned toast in front of my dad. Not slightly burnt but completely blackened toast.
I was just waiting to see if anyone noticed the burnt toast and would say anything. But Dad just ate his toast and asked me if I did my homework and how my day was. I don’t remember what I told him that night, but I do remember hearing my mom apologizing to dad for burning the toast. And I’ll never forget what he said:
“Sweetie, I love burned toast.”

BACK IN THE DAYS AS AN AFRICAN VILLAGE BOY.
To celebrate an African Child in me is one comical story. From the days in village when as young boys of class four we would trail Chinese construction lorries and tractors constructing the only tarmac road that passes by my homestead the whole day to stealing fruits like guavas from neighbors’ farms. You may approve this kleptomaniac habit if you have never been to my village. I forgive you. But draw your stool near I ignite you (as my people would say when about to pour out juicy gossip).
Every homestead in my village has its own guava trees. These trees are never planted, I mean no one takes seedlings and plants, water and protect them. No. They are propagated by consumers of the seedy fruit involuntary. If you happen to eat a sweet guava somewhere you ensure your stool starting five hours from the time of consumption is offloaded at the far bushy corner of the farm. Just like that. Or rely on unexpected passerby who by chance of urgency or just notoriety decides to offload the seedy stuff on your fence. Either way, every home has a couple if not a bush of guava trees.

KCSE RESULTS
Cherotich Maryvelma among Uasin Gishu top KCSE performers
Cherotich Maryvelma emerged among the top students and well performers in Uasin Gishu County with a grade A (plain) of 82 points in the recent released KCSE results.
Speaking at their home in an interview, the Student who is now an alumnus to Moi University High School, Kesses sub county of Uasin Gishu county, thanked the Almighty God for what she termed a dream come true in her journey towards her future success.
She cited discipline and hard work as the key pillars that led to her success in her education in addition to the encouragements from her teachers and family members at large.
Cherotich also thanked the school management at large for the support it accorded to her as she said that the environment was conducive for her studies.
Her parents expressed their joy upon the success of their daughter claiming that each and every child whether a boy or a girl has equal rights to education.
Mr.Gregory Kipkemboi, the father concurred with his daughter’s sentiments that discipline and hard work are the key pillars any child can use to excel in his or her studies.
Cherotich's mother, Mrs. Judith Kipkemboi added that trust and believe in God through prayers is what made them grow and stand together as a family to make sure that good guidance is given to their daughter even as she was out of their sight.
According to Cherotich, there were many challenges she underwent as a student, she started by highlighting the major one which was the nationwide teachers strike that paralyzed education in the country for more than one month.
However she said that a straight focused student should not feel relaxed and do nothing when such a scenario strikes.
She explained how she seized the opportunity and did constructive studies that led her be among the top performers.
Cherotich now looks forward at joining the best university in Kenya in the move to follow the footsteps of her uncle who is a professor and her elder brothers and sisters who are in the institutions of higher learning.
She aims to be one of the best engineers in the world and believes that her dream will be fulfilled as she waits to join the institution of higher learning.
She finalized by urging those who might have scored below their expectation not to give up as education has no limit and that one’s life is not defined by the grade he or she scores but the determination they have in life.
OUR VALUABLE RESOURCES THAT ARE NOT IN USE
OUR VALUABLE RESOURCES THAT ARE NOT IN USE
In our trip to Nairobi, this week, we traversed several printing companies such as The Government Press, KLB and the KIE now commonly refered to as the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD).
My attention was caught by Kenya Literature Beureu (KLB) where, there seemed to be more of activities going behind the scenes than actually what i initially knew.
Its sub divided into two sections, one for the children and another for adult people,. where i learnt that a lot of research was ongoing in one of the halls.
The adult section of Kenya Literature Beureu
Kenya Literature
Bureau (KLB) is also a home to some of the world's top authors,
researchers and experts in book publishing and printing.
The Bureau has
invested heavily in new technology so as to offer its customers high
quality prints, strong author support programmes and a nurturing
environment to work, learn and grow.
By continuing to invest in cutting-edge
technology and by providing an outstanding environment for authors from
all disciplines, KLB aims to continue in its endeavour to remain the best
in the industry.
As a step in this noble direction, Kenya
Literature Bureau has made meaningful investments in technology and
acquired an ultra-modern Rapida 105 printing press for swift and
cost-effective production, guaranteeing first job change-over and
ultimate print quality.
According to the KLB CEO Mrs. Eveline Obara, already many of its publications are
getting accolades internationally and KLB has been earmarked to be a
centre for training and servicing of KBA Rapida machines in the East and
Central Africa region.
"We are making a conscious effort to
internationalize the Bureau by establishing publishing and marketing
partnerships in the region". said Mrs Obara
These active links enable us to
undertake collaborative research, develop joint programmes and make KLB
attain world class standards.
"Over the last four years, we have
consistently been top performers under Performance Contracting
initiative that seeks to improve service delivery in the Public Service". Mrs. Obara added.
a smiling Obara briefly winded up the interview by these words; "let us use our valuable resources to gain the required skills that will drive our country forward"

FEMALE STUDENTS PROTESTS OVER DUALE INDECENT WORDS
A section of female students from Moi University main campus have this morning accused Hon. Aden Duale following his indecent language he used to attack former Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru in an ongoing NYS saga.
Speaking at the Student Center's Kamukunji, MUSO vice chairperson Elsie Muhonje has said that Hon. Duale should respect women in powers and address them with the respect they deserve.
"Aden Duale should know that women are important people in the society whom should be treated as human beings and not the way he was calling Anne Waiguru that woman". said angry Elsie.
Aden Duale yesterday reacted to Waiguru's claims that he is part and parcel of the NYS saga, and he even went ahead refering to her as that woman, as he was heard saying ".....and i am taking a sabbatical leave just to deal with that woman............"
Aden Duale has already said he would sue former devolution cabinet secretary Anne Waiguru if she fails to prove that he had a hand in the KSh 791 million National Youth Service scandal.
Initially Anne Waiguru claimed that Duale and other top political leaders, especially from URP, tried to stop her from inviting Directorate of Criminal Investigations to probe suspicious activities in NYS when she was a minister.

PREGNANT MOTHERS SHOULD BE ALERT
Zika Virus, what you should know
"Malaria kills", "Malaria can be cured", "Use treated mosquito nets" and so many phrases have been used for many generations now here in Kenya and all those countries lying along the Equator. However, behind-the-scenes has established another old yet big little known about by not only Kenyan but the whole world! I have therefore gone outside the boundaries, dig deep in to our real health hazard that is caused by mosquito and now brings you more about this endangered disease that is threatening to kill off every young child on the universe.
Days in the recent past has been filled by the name “Zika virus” a deadly new identified virus that affects pregnant mothers making them give birth to babies with microcephaly (a brain disorder).
Babies with this condition have abnormally small heads, resulting in developmental issues and in some cases, death.
The virus is named after the Zika forest in Uganda where it was first discovered.
In 1947, the first ever case of Zika virus was reported in Uganda. It was found in a monkey. Later this virus was isolated from a human being in 1954 in Nigeria.
Zika is caused by Aedes aegypti mosquito. Its linked to thousands of babies born with birth defects more children born with relatively small heads a condition medically known us microcephaly.
This mosquito has for long been known as the yellow fever mosquito which is common in parts of Rift valley in Kenya.
The Aedes mosquito does not need natural water to breed as it lays eggs in the small and plentiful pools of stagnant water.
Prior to 2015, Zika virus outbreaks have occurred in areas of Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands.
In May 2015, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) issued an alert regarding the first confirmed Zika virus infections in Brazil.
Zika virus will continue to spread and it will be difficult to determine how the virus will spread over time. Currently, outbreaks are occurring in many countries.
Fatalities due to the virus are uncommon and the symptoms are often too mild to require hospitalization even though there is no medical way of protecting yourself against the virus as there is no commercial vaccine available so far.
Though Kenya health experts say that the country is “safe”, WHO Director General, Dr. Margaret Chan said, that meanwhile, Zika is “spreading explosively” and it could affect many countries in the world including Kenya.
Dr Chan said in the special gathering that preventing mosquitoes from breeding and protecting oneself from mosquito bites is the best protection.
“It is an emerging virus and things are definitely going to change. Due to our experience with mosquito-borne viruses we can anticipate that the number of people with the virus is going to grow,” said Dr Chan,
She added that these mosquitoes bite both at night and during the day saying it is an extra ordinary event that needed a coordinated response.
“I am now declaring that the recent cluster of microcephaly and other neurological abnormalities reported in Latin America following a similar cluster in French Polynesia in 2014 constitutes a public health emergency of international concern”, she said.
Chan added that priorities were to protect pregnant women and their babies from harm and to control the mosquitoes that are spreading the virus.
In an exclusive interview with Behind-the-Scenes, The Uasin Gishu County Malaria Coordinator and Disease Surveillance Officer Mr. Joshua Tarus revealed that currently there is no vaccine nor medication to stop the spread of Zika virus.
Tarus added that the signs of Zika virus include fever, rash, joint pain and conjunctivitis among others.
The Center for Deasese Control (CDC) states that just like Malaria, Zika virus is mosquito – borne. This means that when an Aedes mosquito bites an infected person, it then passes the virus on to all other people that it bites.
The infected person is only a carrier if they show symptoms, after that, chances are low that they could pass the disease on to others.
Unborn children are at special risk because they can get infected with the dangerous virus through their mother’s amniotic fluid.
The CDC continues to states that the virus can also be transmitted through sexual intercourse, labour and laboratory exposure.
It’s feared that Zika may become pandemic if concerted efforts are not put by the international community thus a catastrophe in waiting.
No wonder, some governments in Latin America have advised women not to get pregnant for months or years following the risk of birth defects from Zika virus.
It is suspected that there is a link between expectant mothers getting Zika and their babies being born with abnormally small head. This situation can be deadly as children who survive face intellectual disability, vision problems and development delays.
Just recently, France based Drug Maker Sanofi Pasteur announced that it’s starting an effort to research and develop a vaccine to prevent the mosquito borne virus.
